Quarters Drinking Game

Quarters is one of the oldest drinking games around. You bounce a quarter off the table and try to land it in a cup. Make the shot and you pick who drinks.

All it takes is a coin, a cup, and a hard table. It is easy to learn and surprisingly hard to master.

How to Play Quarters

Setup: Put an empty glass in the middle of the table. Sit around it.

Shooting: On your turn, bounce the quarter off the table so it lands in the glass. Hold it between your thumb and finger and snap it down, flat side first.

  • Make it: Pick any player to take a sip, and shoot again.
  • Make three in a row: Make a rule that lasts the rest of the game. Break it and you drink.
  • Miss: Pass the quarter to the player on your left.

Some groups play speed quarters, with two glasses and two coins racing around the table. If the coin behind you lands before you make your shot, you take a sip.

Tips

  • Wipe the table dry. A wet surface kills the bounce.
  • A short, wide glass is the easiest target for beginners.
  • Use a coin that is clean. It is going in a cup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of cup works best for Quarters?

A short, wide glass or a rocks glass. Tall cups are harder to hit and tip over easily.

Do you have to use a quarter?

No. Any coin that bounces well will work, but quarters have the right weight and size, which is how the game got its name.

Can you play Quarters without alcohol?

Yes. Use any drink. The skill part is bouncing the coin, so it is fun with soda or water too.
